Bar Brunello is a casually elegant wine bar in downtown Durham serving a diverse selection of wines, charcuterie and cheese plates.
Esteban Brunello, Owner/Wine Director
Buenos Aires native Esteban Brunello brings more than 15 years of restaurant experience to his new venture Bar Brunello. His career began in San Francisco where he started out as a busser and worked his way up the restaurant ranks as a food runner, server, bartender, manager, sommelier, and wine director. Esteban has been fortunate to work for several prominent wine-focused restaurants in the Bay Area including: SPQR, Oliveto, Farina, and The Barrel Room. In 2013, he received a “Rising Star Sommelier Award” from the New York-based culinary magazine StarChefs. Esteban has trained with the International Sommelier Guild and holds the title “Italian Wine Specialist” through the North American Sommelier Association and the Associazione Italiana Sommelier.
Esteban and his family moved to Durham in 2015 and immediately felt at home in the Bull City. With a love of pork products, barbeque, rambling conversations, and laidback living, North Carolina and Argentina are a bit of kindred souls. Esteban is excited to bring a diverse wine program to Bar Brunello, which highlights old world wines as well as lesser-known regions and varietals. That said, he is a no-fuss kind of wine guy who believes that, above all else, wine drinking is about having fun and being with friends. His true passion is guiding guests to find new and unexpected wines that they love to drink.
Orange is the New Red
Orange wine is our specialty at Bar Brunello. In fact, our wine list currently has the largest selection of Orange wines in the world! Orange wine is a unique style of winemaking that is quickly becoming popular among American wine drinkers. In this class guests will taste a selection of wines that exhibit the range of notes and flavors that are specific to Orange wine.
365 Days of Rosés
There’s often the misconception that Rosé wines are only for drinking during the spring and summer months. That’s just not true: Rosés can be enjoyed 365 days a year! This class will include a selection of varying styles of Rosé from distinct wine regions, including one highly unusual bottle.
Riesling Isn’t Always Sweet
Riesling is a varietal that’s often perceived as a sweet wine, but in this class guests will explore the many sides of Riesling. The class will include a selection of Rieslings from different areas of Europe, including dry Rieslings as well as mutations of the varietal.
Island Wine Hopping
It’s summertime and the drinking is easy in this class. Come explore a selection of wines from Santorini, Corsica, Sardinia, Sicily, and The Canary Islands. The different soils of these islands – volcanic rock, iron, and sand – bring a unique complexity to the wines. This is one you won’t want to miss.
If you love sparkling wine, then this is the class for you. The tasting selection will include a range of different styles of bubbles from floral sparkling Rosé, to bright Italian sparkling, to complex Champagne. One thing is for sure: sparkling is certainly a wine to be celebrated. Cin-cin!
Brunello To Brunello
Brunello is not only our last name – it’s also one of our all-time favorite wines. Known throughout the world as one of the most expensive and finely crafted varietals, this class will include selections of the best expression of Sangiovese in the world: Sangiovese Grosso from Montalcino in Tuscany. Most acclaimed for it’s structure, complexity, and texture this is a wine you must taste to believe.
Dessert Wine Candy
Trick or Treat - it’s a Halloween wine tasting party! Though sometimes perceived as syrupy, sweet wines can also offer complex notes, especially when aged. In this class, guests will taste a range of well-crafted dessert wines including versions that offer good acidity. Halloween costumes are encouraged!
In honor of #RawWineWeek we’ve added a November class! Raw wine is a process and philosophy of winemaking that involves organic and biodynamic agricultural practices. These wines are natural, artisanal products made without additives and with minimal interventions. Raw wine is vibrant, intense, complex and alive.
